Sushi - It's Sour

Image : http://www.flickr.com

sushi in Japan is vinegared rice topped with other ingredients including fish, various meats, and vegetables. Outside of Japan, the term is frequently meant to mean the raw fish itself or any fresh raw-seafood dishes. Sashimi is the sliced raw fish alone.

sushi is the rice component of the food. It is an archaic grammatical form of a word that is no longer used in other contexts. The literal meaning of sushi is "it's sour," a reference to the vinegar present in the rice.

There are a variety of types of sushi including makizushi, nigirizushi, inarizushi, and chirashi-zushi. Makizushi is a roll form of sushi. It is sushi served inside rolled nori. Nori is dried and pressed sheets of seaweed or algae. Nigirizushi is sushi in which the toppings are laid with hand-formed clumps of rice.

Inarizushi is sushi that's toppings are stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu. Tofu is a food of Chinese origins. It is made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the curds into blocks. Chirashi-zushi sushi has toppings served scattered over a bowl of sushi rice.

The main ideal behind sushi is the preservation and fermentation of fish with salt and rice. The process has been traced to China and other parts of Southeast Asia. These areas still have fish and rice fermentation dishes today. By allowing the rice to ferment around the fish, the vinegar produced by the rice breaks the fish down into amino acids. This results in umami, one of the five basic tastes in Japanese food.

Modern Japanese sushi bears little resemblance to the traditional lacto-fermented rice dishes. It used to be that the broken down fish was taken out of the rice, only the fish was eaten, and the fermented rice was thrown out.

During the Muromachi period from 1336 to 1573, vinegar was added to the mixture for better taste and better preservation. The vinegar emphasized the rice's sourness and was also known to increase its life span. The fermentation process was shortened and eventually abandoned.

Today, sushi is known worldwide although it is not enjoyed by everyone. In the United States, it becomes ever more popular. The food is served and created in mainstream grocery stores, not just in restaurants.

3 Proven Ways to Get Your Sushi Knife Set - Hassle Free!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In the same way, buying one from the market, whether offline or online, can be a tremendous task as there is just too much advertisements and marketing ploys out there that just cause the average person information overload. Still, that delectable sashimi treat, or mouth watering octopus and squid combination can't wait and nothing's going to stop you from getting the best cutlery set to help cook your masterpiece - even if it means stressing you out. You won't get into that same rut if you follow these surprisingly simple steps outlined below.

1. Buy from a reputable dealer. It's best if it's a Japanese manufacturer as you are assured of high quality materials, but basically you can get that as well if you shop from a trusted source or have already a researched brand that you've tested and proven. If you want a hassle free time, avoid merchants that you haven't even heard of, or seem to be unprofessional based from their website - even if they're selling at rock bottom prices. Which brings us to the next step...

2. Be cautious about low-end bargains. sushi knife sets come in different prices (roughly anywhere between $25 to $1,000) and for good reason. You get what you pay for. The ones that are in the lower end of the price list often have poor quality, rarely hold their edge, and are not as sharp as you expect.

Looking for a great bargain with these kind of prices is the same as finding a needle in a haystack. It is time consuming, you have no guarantees, and it leaves you all stressed out. And if the difference is just a couple of hundred dollars and the trade-off is the result of your culinary masterpiece, stop and think for awhile and you'll know that it's not worth it. Some of the better sushi knife sets are commonly priced between $300 to $700. To avoid stressing your brain and wallet out, select a price point where you are most comfortable. Then go for it.

3. Don't forget the sharpening stone! If you are familiar with sushi knives, you know that most are only sharpened on one side, for providing a cleaner cut. That's why there are also right-handed and left-handed sets which you need to be aware of.

The Aria Buffet - The New Kid in Town - Great Resort But Is the Buffet Up to Scratch?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The ambiance is outstanding if you like modern, bright and airy! The resort is beautiful. Huge and modern is the key here.

But the all-you-can-eat restaurant here, no matter how huge it is, has, so far, failed to meet its expectations in terms of flavors. Overall, in terms of quality of dishes, this is very much an average all-you-can-eat. What tips the scale in its flavor is the truly spacious and modern environment.

You will love the space, the huge glass walls overlooking onto the Aria's treed pools and gardens, you will appreciate the brand new modern decor. You will never wait for a table to clear here, unless they close several sections.

However, as we were walking from dish to dish we soon realized that almost none of them were of high quality. The problem lies in the flavour. The day before we'd been at the Bellagio all-you-can-eat restaurant and perhaps that raised our dining expectations; however, we were mostly disappointed because we expected to highly enjoy our meals here.

The best aspects of the food offered by this (good but not truly top) This city all-you-can-eat are:

- the small pre-made salads; although served in the smallest glass you could ever find (ridiculous!), very much in the style of the Wynn's, they add a lot of flavor to your otherwise relatively bland salad dish. They contain tasty antipasti-type toppings of relative high-quality.

- the delicious artichokes in the delicatessen section as well as the cold cuts and cheeses (of average quality but always nice to see). You won't find the higher-end cheeses here like at the Bellagio's or the Paris all-you-can-eat restaurants.

- The fact that they serve crab legs for lunch. Some of the top-quality all-you-can-eat restaurants, including the delicious Bellagio's have stopped serving crab legs and other expensive dishes for lunch.

- Delicious, delicate, non-fattening mash potatoes.

- A couple of well cooked vegetable dishes.

- Emmenthal cheese and not only processed cheddar cheese.

- In the sushi section (which is average and small, as in every This city all-you-can-eat except for the Planet Hollywood Todai sushi All-you-can-eat) you will find a spicy salmon roll, which was actually different from the usual bland selection you'll find.

- The dessert section. My friends, who are dessert lovers, have repeatedly stated that they enjoyed this all-you-can-eat's dessert section because, although relatively small, it offers unique choices - all delicious - very classily presented. An example of these are the 'exotic mango glass' and the 'oreo shooter'. Other, more common dessert dishes, such as the 'cream puff' are also of high quality and delicious.

The rest is completely average. You will find all you expect from any good all-you-can-eat restaurants in this city: carving station, fish, all ethnic sections, seafood.

Delete Unnecessary Words to Be a Better Writer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Pleonasm is Greek for using unnecessary words, and pleonastic words are thus unnecessary words. Strunk and White are the first pleonists that we know. Their succinct text outlines the basic elements in writing.

Have you read Strunk and White's "Elements of Style"? In the book, one of the points that Strunk and White make is to delete unnecessary words. They argue that deleting the unnecessary words and using fewer words creates stronger writing, that communicates with more impact.

The above paragraph fails to follow Strunk and White's advice. The following sentence does: Strunk and White's "Elements of Style" commands us to delete unnecessary words, strengthening our writing. This sentence provides all the information in the wordy paragraph above. Nothing is missing.

In the ideal sentence, every word is necessary. Looking back at the final sentence in the second paragraph above, we see that it adds nothing. To improve our writing, we need to learn to delete such sentences.

We human beings are often naturally wordy. Ideal sentences do not flow from the tips of our fingers through the keyboard and on to the screen. Strong writing, writing without unnecessary words, emerges through rewriting.

Here are three examples of words that are often unnecessary:

1. It is: This empty 'it' does not carry any information. 'There is' and 'there are' are also often unnecessary.

2. The book was written by Mark Twain: The passive uses more words. Change the sentence to Mark Twain wrote the book. The writing is shorter and stronger.

3. Use verbs instead of nouns. Compare these two sentences:

He took up a collection for charity.

He collected money for charity.

The second sentence uses two words less and provides more information. Read both sentences aloud to feel the power of the second sentence compared to the first.

Strunk and White provide writers a path to powerful writing. They write as follows:

Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.

To improve your writing, read Strunk and White again and again. Try to follow their advice. Take comfort in the fact that they make the same errors we do. Did you spot the unnecessary "in the fact" above? This adds no information. Delete. Strunk and White tell us that they have the same problem. Vigorous writing demands time. Read Strunk and White again and again, put in the time, and improve your writing.

You Need Resilience and Capacity For Spot Decisions For Succeeding in Tuna Fishing

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The taste of tuna fish is so popular among fish-eaters and hence its demand is growing day by day. Tuna fishing, as a sport, is also getting more and more popular. But, for succeeding in tuna fishing, you should have a lot of resilience and a capacity to take spot decisions. It is a known fact that tuna fish fight fiercely when they are being caught and perhaps, this is the reason that is making fishing sport very adventurous and more attractive.

Since tuna fight fiercely, if you do not use the proper equipments, your equipments may get broken and in the process of catching the fish, you may also get injured. So, when you go for tuna fishing, a 50-pound two speed trolling reel and broomstick-thick rod are absolutely necessary. You should also use the proper bait-fish to catch your tuna fish.

Long-line fishing technique is suggested for doing commercial tuna fishing. Long lines may even be miles in length. In long line, there will be a main line and many branch lines and you should have baited hooks on each of them. In the long-line fishing technique, the boat used is quite large with about 30 to 70 meters length.

Driftnet fishing is another method used for tuna fishing. But this method is used for catching schools of tuna. A large net is used for catching these fish. Once the fish are caught in the net, the net is drawn into the boat. Drift net boats are not as large as long-line fishing boats. They need to be only 10 to 20 meters in length.

You should acquire sufficient knowledge in fishing before you plunge into this sport. You should know the surface temperatures and depths of various locations so that you can decide where to hunt for your tuna fish. Apart from that, you should gather details like weather conditions that prevail in the locations and the weather forecast. This is to avoid situations of finding yourself in trouble by being caught in stormy weather conditions in the middle of the seas. The more the knowledge and details you possess, the better are the chances of your success in your tuna fishing excursions.

For finding the right locations of where you should do your fishing, you should take the clues from the environment that prevails in the seas. You should look for diving birds because if you find a large number of diving birds hunting for bait fish, it shows that the area will have more tuna there. In the same fashion, the presence of large sea animals like dolphins, sharks and whales will also show that tuna fish will be available close by because tuna prefer to hang around these sea animals.

Tuna fish bite better in dim lighting. Hence you are advised to venture into the seas in the early morning hours or later afternoon hours when the lighting will be dim so that you can have a good catch of tuna.

7 Easy Steps to Great Sushi

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Making sushi
When it comes to preparing something tasty, inexpensive, and relatively good for you, I really have to endorse sushi. sushi is a delightfully delicious bit of Japanese cuisine that can be really intriguing and satisfying to prepare yourself. Going out to sushi bars can be fun, but costs a lot. If you learn how to make your own sushi, you'll be able to save money, eat great and keep the kitchen cool in the summer, because don't forget-sushi uses RAW fish. That means no cooking, which means a nice cool kitchen:)

What You Need

Sushi can have many different ingredients, but usually comprises of a few core ingredients. You'll need special short-grained Japanese sushi rice, nori, (flattened sheets of green seaweed) and ingredients to put in the sushi roll. You'll also need some rice vinegar, sugar and salt to add seasoning to the rice. You can get all of these things at any well-stocked local grocery store except for the nori, which you may need to go to an Asian market for. If you don't live near an Asian market, you can look online for a sushi materials supplier. You will also need a very sharp chef's knife or santoku. A bamboo mat is useful, but not necessary, and can also be found at an Asian grocer. Some common sides for sushi include soy sauce for dipping, wasabi paste (the spicy green stuff!) and pickled ginger (which helps clear the palate between different sushi).

First Step

The first thing you want to do is prepare the sushi rice, since it has the greatest preparation time. You need to rinse the rice very thoroughly and then let it sit in water for around 30 minutes. The soaking allows water to soften the rice grains and will make the rice cook properly. I find that 2 cups of rice prepares around 4 full maki rolls (or around 32 pieces of sushi).

Second Step

While the rice is soaking is an ideal time to prepare your components. The most common base ingredient is raw fish. Common species used include yellowfin tuna, salmon, squid or eel. Make sure your fish is very fresh (never frozen!) and preferably sashimi-grade. Go to your supermarket and ask if they have sashimi-grade fish. If they doesn't know what you're talking about, go somewhere else! I like to buy all my fish at the Asian market because I know it's fresh and is of the proper quality for making sushi. In addition to fish, sushi often contains other ingredients to add different flavors or textures like avocado, cucumber, green onion, cream cheese and spicy sauces. Feel free to get a little crazy when it comes to putting ingredients into your sushi roll, as long as you keep it under 3 ingredients or so. I've also had delicious vegan sushi rolls that featured bananas, sweet potatoes or tofu. You're going to require around an 8' long strip of each one of your ingredients. How thick you cut them depends on how many ingredients you want in your roll, but i find around 1/4th inch square is pretty good for three ingredients.

Third Step

Next you need to prepare the rice. The rice should be prepared in a rice cooker which will make perfect rice AND keep your kitchen cool, but if you don't have a rice cooker, you'll have to make do with a microwave or stovetop. Preparing Japanese sushi rice in the microwave can be very difficult and I would strongly suggest you use the stovetop method if you don't have a rice cooker. Place the rice in a medium sized pot with the water level just slightly above the rice level. Bring the rice to a boil, stirring frequently. Do NOT let the rice stick to the bottom or side of the pan. After the water level is down below the rice level, cover the pot and put it on low heat for 8-9 minutes.

Fourth Step

While the rice is cooking, you can prepare the rice seasoning from the rice vinegar, sugar and salt. It's this mixture that gives sushi rice its notable sweet and sour flavor, so it's very important to get this right, but thankfully, it's not especially {tough|tricky|difficult] to get right. When I'm preparing 2 cups of rice, I like to use 3.5 tablespoons of vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of salt. Put all the ingredients in a small saucepan and heat until the sugar and salt dissolve. Do not let the mixture start to boil; it should never get that hot. Stir the mixture to try to make the sugar and salt dissolve fully and then keep it on very low heat until the rice is ready.

Fifth Step

When the rice is done, remove it from the pot into a wooden bowl. Treat the rice carefully-you don't want to crush any of the grains. If any rice is stuck to the side or bottom of the pot, leave it. You don't want any crispy rice in the sushi. It's important to use a wooden bowl because the vinegar seasoning is about to be poured in and the vinegar may react with the metal. With the rice in the bowl, drizzle the seasoning over it and cut it in (don't stir!) with a wooden spoon. You are just trying to coat the grains of rice with the mixture. If you stir too forecefully, you may damage the grains.

Sixth Step

Let the rice cool for a while. You need cool rice to work with when making sushi. I like to take advantage of this time to prepare the rest of my ingredients if I haven't done so already. I also like to tidy up the kitchen at this time (you'll be shocked how much mess you've made in the last 5 steps). In a sushi restaurant this is generally the time when a chef's assistant will actually fan the rice to help it to cool down more quickly.

Seventh Step

When the rice is cool, take a small hunk of it and spread it over the bottom 5/6ths of the nori, which should be on the bamboo mat if you have one. Nori has two sides, a shiny side and a rough side. Make sure you place the shiny side down. The rice should be spread thinly enough to still see little bits of green through the rice, although you can spread it thicker than that if you have only one ingredient. When you've covered the whole nori sheet except the little bit at the top, you're good. It helps to spread the sticky rice by keeping a small bowl of water nearby to dip your fingers into, so they don't stick and get messy. Last Step

Lay your ingredients near the middle-bottom of the nori. Roll up the bottom section of the nori over the ingredients. If you have a bamboo mat, use it to make sure the roll has equal pressure applied on it and is packed tightly. Continue shifting the bamboo mat to roll up more and more of the sushi roll. When you reach the part with no rice, you can roll it over and seal it with a bit of water. Then, use a sharp knife to cut the sushi roll in half. A slight sawing motion is needed and it helps if the knife is dipped into hot water first. Double up the two halves and cut THEM in half to make quarters, and each quarter in half to make eighths. Arrange your sushi rolls on a plate and serve with soy sauce, and wasabi and ginger if you desire. Enjoy!

10 Essential Things to Know Before Visiting a Sushi Bar

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are you a sushi beginner? Never been out for an evening of Japanese seafood dining? Then get yourself ready with the following essential information about how to get the most out of your sushi dining experience.

10 things to know about dining out for sushi

1. This is NOT Chinese food. Far too many people walk into a fine neighborhood sushi establishment and immediately request the Chow Mein special with a chicken egg roll. That's Chinese food, people. Sushi is a fresh, raw and healthy delicacy from Japan.

2. Watch out for the sake. Sake looks harmless enough; it is served from decorative bottles in tiny cups and glasses. But watch out for the alcohol kick from this strong spirit. To experience a sushi restaurant in full, enjoy a glass - but in keep it all in moderation.

3. Start with cooked menu items. It is a common misconception that all sushi is raw. Beginners may want to give cooked items such as California rolls or unagi (eel) a try before moving on to raw dishes.

4. Stick with what you know. Many of the types of fish you have enjoyed for years are available at a sushi bar - simply in raw form. If you like salmon or grouper - stick with their raw equivalent when ordering sushi for the first time.

5. Be prepared for the omakase. Omakase is loosely translated as "chef's choice" and ordering it puts you in the hands of the experienced sushi chef. Bear in mind, that while this option may indeed produce some delightful dishes, they may be a little too advanced for the novice palette.

6. Go veggie if you like. Did you know that you can eat a completely satisfying sushi dinner without eating any fish? It's easy if you stick to the vegetable rolls (such as the cucumber roll) and substitute veggies for seafood in other dishes.

7. It's good to ask questions. At some snootier fine dining establishments (French restaurants, we're looking in your direction) asking questions is frowned upon. However, at sushi bars, questions are encouraged. The best sushi chefs love to talk about their craft and share insight into the different dishes they will be serving.

8. Sushi is a healthy meal. Sushi is low in fat, filled with important nutrients and packed with vital protein. If you eat out once a week, it is much better for your body than a burger joint or chain restaurant.

9. Start the kids out young. The best way to raise a child with a sophisticated palette is to introduce them to different dishes at a young age. Taking them to a fun sushi restaurant is a great way to start them out on a life-long love of great seafood and Japanese cuisine.

10. You can enjoy sushi AND keep kosher. More and more, sushi restaurants are offering full kosher options as part of their menu. That means individuals who wish to maintain a strict adherence to their kosher diet can enjoy all the fun and good taste of a real sushi bar.

Sushi - It's Delicious and Good For You, Too

Image : http://www.flickr.com

sushi has been a mainstay in restaurants along the West Coast for decades, but it has only really "gone mainstream" across the United States in the last 15 years or so. Perhaps the rising popularity of sushi-eating was a natural reaction to the fat-laden fast-food industry.

Maybe people simply discovered its delectable flavors and the good news spread. Whatever the reason, sushi has become the popular dining choice for millions of Americans each and every day. And no wonder: sushi is not only delicious: it's good for you too. Here's why.

It is Packed with Protein

Many forms of sushi contain fish in one carnation or another: either in its fleshy form or as roe. The protein that comes from fish products is extremely lean and therefore is more heart-healthy than eating meat from land-roving creatures.

It is High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Much fuss has been made in the nutrition community over the last several years about the importance of consuming plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids in our diets. These substances raise levels of "good" cholesterol, help to lower blood pressure, and promote overall well-being and health in a variety of other ways too.

A lot of Sushi is Nutrient-Rich

If you favor the seaweed-wrapped and vegetarian varieties, you're in luck! Seaweed and vegetables are rich with essential nutrients that improve vision, enrich blood, and promote cell metabolism. So if you ate sushi just for its tasty properties, now you have even more reasons to visit your local sushi restaurant soon: it's good for you.

Eggplant Sushi

Image : http://www.flickr.com

sushi has been a Japanese delicacy for centuries and was originally intended to preserve fermented fish. Nowadays, sushi bars (famous for its conveyor belts) have become upscale restaurants in high-class cities. But, you don't need to be upper crust to enjoy this simple Japanese meal. You only need to know how to make sushi.

There are many sushi-making kits out there with their own how-to books and guides. Find a book with simple recipes that a beginner can try out. You'll be surprised to see how many simple dishes there really are.

The ingredients are not many. You only need rice (Japanese is the best bet, since they have a unique consistency can hold the sushi together), rice vinegar, sugar, salt, nori (seaweed) and toppings of your choice (eggs, cucumbers or crabsticks).

First, you will have to cook the rice. Most brands actually give instructions at the back of the packet, but in case they don't, here are some pointers. You cook the rice the normal way by rinsing it with cold water and cook in a rice cooker. What's important is to dissolve the vinegar, salt and sugar in a pan under low heat for a few minutes before letting it cool in a bucket of ice. Add the mixture into the cooked rice a little at a time. While doing that, you need to 'fold' the rice with a spatula without squishing them. It is ready when there is a shine to the grains.

The next part requires a bit of creativity. Spread the rice on a large piece of seaweed, which in turn is placed on a sushi mat. Add your toppings on the rice and start rolling! You may not get it right the first time, but that's how you make sushi. You rarely get it right the first time.

A delicious topping for sushi is eggplant. This fruit (yes, it is actually a fruit), comes in many shapes and sizes, the most common one being purple and long. It can also be cooked in many ways, from being sautéed, char-boiled and even pickled. If you want to make it as a sushi topping, you will have to know how to cook an eggplant.

The Japanese usually pickle this delicacy and make them into tempura. It is best to serve them raw, with a little lemon juice to prevent browning, if you want it to be part of a sushi roll. You can also, grill these beauties on a searing hot grill for a smokier flavor. For those stir-fry nuts, cubed eggplants can be added to a hot wok with salt, garlic and red chilies.

Whatever way you cook it, eggplant will always taste good, especially if it is in a roll of Japanese rice and nori.

Dangers of Sushi - What Are the Dangers and Risks of Eating Sushi?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It's funny to think of how sushi is constantly portrayed as a healthy food by many people. Yet in reality although it may not have gone through the cooking processes to create trans fat or destroy its nutrition it does come with many other risks as I'll explain. Find out the exact dangers of sushi and why you should be concerned about them.

What are the risks of eating sushi?

Parasites: These organisms are well known to exist in just about any life form they can extract nutrients out of. Fish are no exception! Most times you won't actually notice the effects of a parasite until enough time has passed for it to cause health problems for you. As the entire purpose of a parasite is to remain hidden and not detected, many of the symptoms it can cause you wouldn't even think of such as emotional and mental problems, worsened allergies and asthma amongst other things. Of course they also cause many digestive problems. Simply put sushi is never safe from parasites, in fact were you aware the real reason wasabi is recommended with sushi is because it kills parasites and some bacteria found on sushi, so at the very least make sure to eat lots of wasabit with your sushi. Avoid the ginger however as most of it contains aspartame, bet you didn't know that!

Heavy Metals: Fish are easily the #1 worst food to eat in terms of heavy metals. Some studies have found heavy metal levels so high that consuming some fish more often than once per month can cause significant toxicity. Mercury, lead and aluminum are but a few of the major contaminants. Symptoms can include physical, mental and emotional problems just like parasites such as chronic fatigue, depression and a difficulty concentrating. Immune suppression is very common which can lead to a host of other problems down the road including cancer.

Bacteria: If it wasn't bad enough already you then have the bacteria which are responsible for the more acute symptoms of food poisoning people experience on occasion from eating raw food such as sushi. Salmonella is but one example of many. It's one of the most commonly experienced dangers of sushi. What most people do not realize is that often who are most susceptible to being affected by bad bacteria also suffer from another fungus in their body known as candida.

Candida is in approximately 90% of the population and those who suffer from either parasites, heavy metals or a chronic bacterial infection are at the greatest risk of suffering from it. So even if you end up doing a parasite cleanse you now have the job of clearing out candida from your body. It causes a greater amount of symptoms than all the risk factors above combined and next to heavy metals can be one of the most difficult to completely eliminate unless a proper plan of action is following. First though you should take a candida test to see if any symptoms you experience from day to day are major signs of candida.

Asian Theme Weddings Make Your Wedding Special

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Asian theme weddings are chosen by couples who wish to add class and style to their wedding. It is mainly the delicious cuisine, beautiful floral arrangements and the culture of the Far East that invokes a desire to have Asian theme weddings.

So to keep in line with these Asian theme weddings, you first have to think of the right wedding dress. The first thing that comes to mind for this dress is a brilliant gown of red silk embedded with designs of flowers and dragons stitched in golden thread.

Your wedding dress has to match Asian theme weddings

However if you are uncomfortable with this then you may consider something more classical like a snug white silk gown, having silver embroidery. Another choice is brocade, which is preferable in cold weather.

Not only do you need an Asian dress, but you have to accessorize this dress with the right touches. Try pulling your hair back, to secure it with rosewood chopsticks or perhaps, a comb of green jade. Choose jewelry that is simple, but elegant like a pearl necklace and wear sandalwood shoes that match the color and pattern of the wedding dress.

Invitations can create the ambiance for Asian theme weddings

Another important part of Asian theme weddings is the wedding invitation. As this is the first thing that your guests see it is important that you choose the right card that gives the ambiance of Asian theme weddings.

You can choose from spell bounding crafted themed invitations having kanji script and small origami. One popular choice is the embossed Chinese character of 'love' and with chiyogami, it is possible to turn an ordinary invitation into something exotic.

Have a sushi menu for your wedding

Of course, no Asian theme weddings are complete without Asian wedding cuisine and food. You can choose your wedding day menu based on your favorite Asian cuisine.

If you like Chinese teriyaki flavors, or Thai cuisine or perhaps Japanese sushi, you could use them for inspiration in the different courses of your wedding menu. You could also think of giving an American twist to these dishes to make them more interesting.

In addition to this, choose beverages like Sapparo, sake and green or white tea to make your Asian theme weddings more memorable. The finishing touches for Asian themed weddings are using Asian wedding flowers and table decorations for decorations and Asian wedding favors for your guests to cherish your Asian theme wedding.

Enjoy the Emperor of Sushi Restaurants - Mikado Sushi

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In western societies Mikado sushi is a very popular group of restaurants which offers first-class Japanese foodstuff. Mikado, being the Japanese imperial name, always establishes its stature very high. The restaurant is at its boom because of its name and the growing understanding about sushi in North America.

All the big cities of United States and Canada possess at least one restaurant of Mikado sushi.

There is one most common misconception about the sushi is that all the sushi meals must be made of raw fish which is wrong. There is also a very immense majority of sushi dishes which are totally vegetarian. However lots of western peoples particularly like raw fish in the sushi, Mikado Sushi is also offering other sushi meal for each and everybody.

At Mikado Sushi you will be given the choice of eating with chopsticks. There are unlike ways adopted while having foodstuff in Japanese and western cultures. Lots of rituals are well established if you are having your food in Japanese environment. However, Japanese do not hesitate to use their fingers while eating and usually they remain at ease with the way they eat their foodstuff.

It is considered as bad-manners if you leave your chopsticks right at the table or put them beside your palate, however, if you use your fingers while eating sushi, they have no crisis with that. Eating sushi might infuriate most of the Americans because of strange utensils used by Japanese, eating with the aid of fingers which may get unclean and producing weird sounds. For example Japanese eat Ramen with a chopstick and a small scoop and produce frustrating sounds.

If your fingers get stained do not worry at all because you can only enjoy the sushi when you remain at ease with it, in the end you can always use the napkins to clean yourself.

If you do not feel like using chopsticks simply use your fingers which may add more excitement. Sushi is very soft that is why you cannot use fork or other table utensils to have it otherwise it would fall into pieces.

Be specific and order your foodstuff at Mikado Sushi according to your appetite. Because leaving sushi without eating is against Japanese norms. In the case of Ramen or other such dishes you can eat them entirely; however, there is a possibility that you leave some soy sauce or sushi at your palate uneaten.

Ninja Sushi Hawaii

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When I really feel like I need raw fish, I usually go to Star Market at the Mililani Town Center for a quick fix of poke. But one day, I remembered that there's also a sushi place at the Mililani Town center called Ninja sushi. At first glance this Hawaii restaurant is really clean and the photos of the menu are enlarged and plastered all over the restaurant. You are basically salivating the moment you walk into the place. Not only do they have large colorful pictures of their menu all over the restaurant, they have a rather large detailed picture menu at the take-out counter. I'd say that the menu is at least one third the length of the counter. The only thing that I don't like about the menu is that they don't have scallops! AHHH! Scallops are my favorite.

Ninja sushi isn't very big, I'd say they can seat only about 40 people tops, typical for a mid budget restaurant in Hawaii. But if you don't want to take up an entire table if you're sitting by yourself, they offer bar-style seating (but sorry no bartender). The service is pretty good--I haven't run into a bad egg yet. There are no conveyor belts passing sashimi around for an hour--everything is made fresh upon demand. You basically place your order like you're at McDonald's, but they take your name. They'll either call your name or serve you at your table. I only believe in giving tips at restaurants if the help actually waits on me at my table, and clean up after me when I leave. So I've never left a tip at Ninja Sushi because that's not how the place is set up. On the other hand, they do have a jar for tips at the front counter if you feel inclined to give a tip no matter what.

I have written a lot about many Hawaii Restaurants but now let's get down to the nitty gritty-- the food. I've only been to ninja sushi Hawaii a few times, so I can only comment on a few things. While I think they slice their fish on the thin side, the creativity of the menu was pretty amazing. My favorite thing to eat at their restaurant is the Lion maki. I really liked how all of the different textures come together for each delectable bite-- especially the use of french fried onions on top of the roll.

Pigmentation Spots on Skin - Top 5 Cream Ingredients That Can Get Rid of Them

There are lots of treatments that can help get rid of pigmentation spots on skin. These spots commonly appear because of excessive sun exposure. The UV rays of the sun bring forth an abnormal melanin production.

Many people in this day and age still prefer the use of moisturizing creams rather than painful and expensive, albeit effective, dermatological treatments. However, you don't have to rely on those products that take such a long time in lessening the appearance of the spots on you skin. If you are going to commit to the use of one product, make sure it is really effective. Here are some of the ingredients that are potent enough to bring results in just a few weeks:

1. Extrapone Nutgrass
This is a plant ingredient that has often been used as an Ayurvedic treatment. This can help control the excessive production of melanin. You can use this to get rid of those spots. What make this ingredient different from the other lightening ingredients are its hydrating and soothing benefits. It makes skin feel softer and smoother in addition to lessening rashes, inflammation and redness.

2. CynergyTK
This ingredient is what you need so your dermis is not susceptible to the appearance of many skin problems. It was extracted from sheep wool and it contains an abundant amount of keratin, a functional protein responsible for the continuous growth of collagen and elastin. This ingredient effectively improves the elasticity and resilience of the skin.

3. Phytessence Wakame
This is a kind of sea kelp often used by Japanese people as an ingredient for sushi. Japanese women also use it as a facial mask. It contains components that can drive away harmful enzymes in the body. These enzymes tend to break down hyaluronic acid, the acid that supplies moisture to collagen proteins. If collagen is well-nourished, it does not get damaged easily.

4. Maracuja
It is a Brazilian kind of passion fruit that has emollient properties very similar to human skin. You need this in order to make your dermis softer and smoother. Hydrating the skin is one way of warding off so many skin problems. Because it contains emollient properties similar to skin, it can immediately adhere to skin functions.

5. Nano Lipobelle HEQ10
When under chronic sun exposure, the body undergoes chemical reaction process that leads to the formation of harmful free radicals. You need this antioxidant because it contains smaller molecules that can help fight free ranging radicals.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Popular Wine Varieties

There are many types and varieties of wine available. For anyone wanting to try and match a great wine with a specific type of meal, then you can't go wrong making your choice form one of the more popular varieties around.

Let's take a look at some of the more popular wine varieties:

Cabernet Sauvignon

Often abbreviated to the less-than-lovely name 'cab-sav', the flavorful cabernet sauvignon is a classic French wine that is one of the most widely recognized red wine varieties. This full-bodied red wine blend can be the ideal accompaniment to a fine steak, a roast lamb or on its own as a drinking red wine.

Merlot

Merlot should ideally be a very soft red wine that is also quite rich without the high tannin levels of other reds. Whether on its own or blended with a great cab-sav, merlot is lovely served with chicken or can an excellent drinking red wine.

Shiraz

This very dark red wine is rich and full with amazing peppery flavors. An excellent complimentary wine for any meat dish, with a barbecue or on its own, Shiraz wines can be matured for several decades and just get better.

Shiraz was originally produced from grapes from the Middle Eastern countries although South Australia's brilliant wine region is now said to produce some of the finest award-winning Shiraz wines in the world.

Served with peppery or mustard-based sauces on spicy, garnished meats, Shiraz is the perfect complimentary red wine.

Grenache

Grenache is a very soft, subtle red wine that is often blended with other types of wine to produce distinct flavors and blends. A glass of chilled Grenache goes beautifully with most spicy foods.

Pinot Noir

Pinot noir is a stunning light- to medium-bodied red wine with a fine fruity aroma. When this fine wine is well aged, it can develop lovely floral flavors

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is easily one of the most popular white wines anywhere. Traditionally these wonderfully melon flavored wines are allowed to mature in oak barrels for up to 3 years. Chardonnay is ideal served along with salmon.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon blanc is a very ripe tasting white wine that can have a quite aggressive aroma as compared to other white wines. Sauvignon Blanc is a lovely white wine that is excellent with seafood and a great accompaniment to Japanese sushi, but is even better on its own as a drinking white wine.

Semillon

This classic full-bodied dry French white wine is often misunderstood by people living outside of France or Australia. Often criticized for lacking in intensity, Semillon has a distinctly fruity flavor that is more subtle than some of the 'heavier' white wines and so it's often blended with a Sauvignon Blanc to create a wonderful light drinking wine.

Riesling

Riesling was original a German wine that is now made successfully in many countries around the world. Rieslings are classically fruity and can be either sweet or dry, which makes them an ideal compliment to many spicier cuisines.

Interesting Facts About a Japanese Sushi

Image : http://www.flickr.com

sushi is one of the most popular Japanese foods. It is a complete dish with raw fish and rice as the primary ingredients. The distinctive quality of Japanese rice sticky when it is cooked makes it appropriate for sushi. Japanese sushi is said to be "vinegar rice" in most Japanese cuisine because the rice used in sushi are seasoned with sugar and vinegar.

This traditional Japanese dish often topped with other ingredients including fish, various meats, and vegetables is usually dipped in condiments like soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger before eating and it is eaten with chopsticks or by hand.

Health Benefits
Eating Japanese sushi could give health benefits. The two main ingredients namely raw fish and rice are great source of high protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals and importantly has low fat content. Such fat found in Japanese sushi is mostly unsaturated fat. An example is Omega-3, good for the heart.

There is no fat introduced in sushi's preparation for it is served raw. The high levels of protein in Sushi are found in fillings. These are fish, tofu, seafood, egg, and many others. The vegetables used for sushi are rich source of minerals and vitamins. And the rice and the vegetables used are sources of carbohydrates.

Health hazards
Since one chief ingredient of Japanese sushi is fish, it does not mean it is free of health hazards. Fish like tuna especially blue fin contains high levels of mercury. It poses some danger when these are consumed in significant amounts. For this reason, since January of 2008, only a number of New York City dining establishments serve tuna sushi with sufficiently high mercury content that a weekly reference dose is limited to 2 to 6 pieces. This will depend on the quantity of tuna in the sushi and the weight of the person.

Undercooked seafood and salty condiments
The Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a bacterium that grows in undercooked seafood. This can cause intestinal problem like diarrhea. Sushi also can be a mode of transmission of parasites and pathogens. So, it is important that sushi is properly prepared to avoid any problem.

Salty condiments like soy sauce are usually combined with sushi by the diner in whatever amount is desired. Such salty condiment can be dangerous to people with hypertension or renal disorders if overly taken.

Conveyor belt sushi restaurants
A well-known and inexpensive way of eating sushi is in restaurants with a conveyor belt sushi and sushi train. These unique restaurants are widely found in Japan and are becoming large in number abroad. The sushi in this restaurant is served on color coded plates. Each color denotes the cost of the sushi serving.

The sushi plates are placed on a moving strip or platform. Customers choose their desired plates as the belt or boat passes. They let the food pass if they do not like it, and the other customer could take it as it passes them. The customer's bill is tallied by counting the number of plates of each color they have taken.

This unique way of serving food is also now being adapted in Japanese restaurants in other countries. It saves a lot of space and customers are able to get their orders fast.

Minimalist Japanese style
The traditional serving of sushi is inspired by simplistic and minimalist styles. The food is usually laid in basic symmetry, in wooden and monotone plates. However, small sushi restaurants do not use plates because the food is eaten directly off from the wooden counter.

What's In Sushi - Unlocking The Secrets Of Working Effectively With Japanese Organizations

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Eating sushi is like penetrating the minds of Japanese, according to Director of Culture Dynamics, Lily Lau. "It's not what you say, but what you don't say that matters when dealing with Japanese," says Lau.

"It's a bit like eating sushi. It looks beautiful and subtle and the first bite can be a real experience. To fully appreciate sushi, one needs to like and acquire the taste," explains Lau.

"Like that first bite of sushi, communicating with Japanese can be an experience if you don't take the time to understand differences in cultures. People can quickly become frustrated and many wish taken the time to learn Japanese," says Lau. Naturally, when you can speak Japanese, it's a lot easier to get the message through.

Communicating with Japanese

Lau adds she has long wanted to discover how well Japanese communicate, with each other "I wanted to find out if what sometimes appears to be communication failures is actually embedded in Japanese culture, or if it was really a matter of cross-cultural communication difficulties."

Author of Reading the Mind of Japanese, Robert March, says "Verbal communication is far less important than other (communication) forms to the Japanese. They live in a culture that fosters elegant, standardized human interaction."

According to Lau, "Among themselves, the Japanese perceive few communication problems, because of the mono-cultural nature of Japan with standardized values and customs. "

Silence, indirect expression, intuitive understanding, use of euphemisms, non-verbal language, and gestures, are regarded by Japanese as the esthetic acts, because they are done with style to effect communication with the minimum of words or effort. "Therefore, to a foreigner what is heard is only a fraction of what is meant, the tip of the meaning iceberg," says Lau.

And this invisible language of indirect expression can become a source of irritation and confusion for foreigners. Japanese have many ways of indicating "no", without actually saying so explicitly. 'That will be difficult', and 'I'll think about it', are common circumlocutions.

"When Japanese hear these statements, they have a pretty good idea that the answer is definitely "no", but non-Japanese usually interpret the word "difficult" literally, as meaning inability or incompetence.

"If a non-Japanese tries to assist the Japanese to solve apparent problems of inability or incompetence, confusion and misunderstanding can happen, for the apparent problems do not in fact exist. The word 'no' was simply missed by the non-Japanese," says Lau.

Difficult is a Japanese euphemism for 'impossible'. Misunderstandings are also likely when a "think about it" response is taken literally as a promise to consider the matter.

"To decipher this invisible Japanese language, one must learn the art of dealing with Japanese and that demands an understanding of the Japanese mind," explains Lau.

Mind Reading
"An effective tool to help people understand the Japanese mind and see beyond verbal language is Directive Communication(TM) (DC). DC is a methodology that affects how people act and react in groups and has many elements that allow DC practitioners a greater perception of the Japanese invisible language," say Lau.

"DC is a foundational science for influencing individual and group dynamics as they relate to productivity and leadership across any discipline within organizations and its application in Japanese owned companies in Malaysia is invaluable. Directive Communication(TM) is the essence for understanding and developing rapport at the deepest levels of acceptance to create reaction transformation and influence a more enriching and productive work environment," reiterates Lau.

Hearing the Answers
"An important aspect of DC is the questioning technique using Directive Questioning. Why do you think that questions are important, when most people think they must inform to persuade? Questions provide three important parts of the persuasion process. They are discovery, sincerity and focus. They give you the necessary information to find an appropriate solution to a problem," says Lau.

"Imagine you are trying to get into a Japanese company to be their supplier for your products. You have given a presentation and you are uncertain of the intention of the Japanese. To avoid the ambiguity of "yes" or "difficult" reply from the Japanese, you should probe further using the three steps DC questioning technique," continues Lau.

The first part of the persuasion process is discovery. "Your discovery questions could be something like, 'What specifically do you like my products?' or 'What would you consider an ideal supply to your company?' You can also try to ask, 'How specifically would you confirm our orders?' or 'What would be the one most important criterion in making this happen?' suggests Lau.

"The above questions set out your discovery to the criteria required. You may have broken the surface and penetrate into a deeper level of communication with the Japanese if your questions are asked correctly," explains Lau.

"If you think you could not meet the criteria or requirement specified, you probably stop here and end your conversation. If you think the Japanese' requests meet your requirement, you probe further."

The second part of the process is sincerity. "You must have sincerity to help people, besides the business and money objectives. Such sincerity must be congruent with the correct vocal tones and body language, otherwise you are doing more harm than good," explains Lau.

"Your sincerity questions could be something like 'If I could change the design to the way you wanted, would you...?', 'If I could commit to the amount of supply you wanted, would you...?' or 'If I could do something to help you to achieve your production, would you...?' Basically it is your ability to express your sincerity in understanding exactly what your perspective wants in order to fulfill his needs. You may have penetrated into the deeper level of communication with the Japanese when your sincerity is felt," continues Lau.

"The last and most important part is directing focus which is the ingredient in the Question recipe, simply because in a world where your perceptions are often more important than reality, and where your emotions dictate your satisfaction, your mind create and focus on a possible future and make it happen," says Lau.

"Your focus questions could be something like, 'What if I accept your pricing, what quantity of order would you give me?', 'What if you discover that my company is reliable and trustworthy, would you consider to try us out?' or 'What if we shake hands now, would we have a working relationship with you?', suggests Lau.

Your presentation may possibly land you with a contract. If you do not get it, it would give you greater insights of the minds of the Japanese and the technique to breaking the barriers in communication with them.

"It certainly resolves your frustration and put you one step ahead of other competitors. I recommend you to be persistent and do your best to establish a working relationship with the Japanese. Who knows the deal will be yours in the long run? " says Lau.

Being a multi-cultural facilitator and trainer, we practice Directive Questioning and it has proven to be effective in dealing with various groups of people, multi-culturally and cross-culturally.

Communication channels
Tatemae and honne are two distinct channels of verbal communication. They are invariably used in tandem and play a significant role in all areas of Japanese life.

Although difficult to translate accurately, tatemae roughly means "façade" or "face", is primarily used in reference to masking one's real thought or intentions. It is the formal or official communication. Honne, on the other hand, literally means "honest voice" and refers to one's real intention.

In many social and political contexts, these contrasting principles are used to conceal the truth or reality of situation that might be inconvenient or embarrassing to acknowledge publicly.

In business, the tatemae / honne factor is used primarily to conceal some kind of failure and secondarily to camouflage intentions that might prove disadvantageous if done openly.

This kind of behavior is, of course, common in most societies, but in Japan it has been raised to a fine art and is an institutionalized aspect of typical Japanese behavior that exists in all relationships.

Foreigners frequently get into trouble when dealing with them and never knew the truth. To overcome the tatemae / honne tactic, one requires personal antennae that are sharply attuned to the nuances of the Japanese behavior.

The Secrets to Making the Perfect Sushi

Image : http://www.flickr.com

sushi it is a plate of Japanese origin with rice cooked decorated with vinegar of rice, or homemade sushi vinegar and sugar. This preparation is very popular and you can get it world wide and is the most popular food in Japanese gastronomy.
The most of the people associated sushi with seafood or raw fish but, you can also find vegetables or egg, or even deep fry sushi and cook food can also accompany the rice.
The most of the time Sushi is prepared in small portions, mouthful size and can have different shapes and figures.

- When Sushi is presented in a roll of seaweed, (called nori) the name is Maki.

- When presented in a shape of a little ball, with fish (Salmon, Prawn, Tuna) placed over the ball of rice it would be called Nigiri.

- Little balls of rice with a strip of Nori around filled with vegetables or any kind of Roe (fish eggs), like Salmon Roe will be called Gunkan.

- Sashimi is just raw fish without rice and there is a lot more, just to name a few........

The most important tips for an excellent homemade sushi:

First you have to make sure that you have all the equipment necessary to make your sushi, like the sushi mat, cling film (BELIEVE IT OR NOT This is going to come in very handy - A little secrect that helps alot when Rolling the perfect Sushi Roll), cutting board, a sharp knife, and a pot
Then make sure you have all the ingredients necessary for sushi, like: Nori (sea weed), short grain rice, Wasabi, Pickled Ginger, Soy sauce, rice vinegar or your own homemade vinegar for sushi, the ingredients primarily depend on the recipe you have chosen.

How to make the perfect sushi rice

- First you have to rinse the rice(short grain) very well, until the water is clear (about 8 to 9 times),

- Place the rice in a pot and cover with clean water. The water level should be approximately 2,5cm above the level of the rice. Cook on a average fire, covered, until the water is boiling, this should take approximately 10 min. Then lower the flame and cook for 6 to 7 minutes more.

Finished this, by raising the flame (Hot flame is required) for 10 seconds.

Rest for 15 minutes, and most important is that the pot should not be opened as the steam plays a important role in getting the Sushi Rice to perfection.

- Put the rice in a pot or bowl - Wood or Plastic (Do not use metal or glass as the materials of these products retain heat, WHERE as we want the exact opposite to happen.)

- Pour Rice Vinegar ( or HomeMade Vinegar - to be found on my blog with loads more info regarding Chef Secrets) on the rice once again approximately 2/3 of the dressing, slowly while stirring the rice smoothly with a spatula or spoon (preferably wood).
(1 cup per each kilo of rice and 1 ½ of rice vinegar per kilo of rice)

- Stir well so that the dressing is impregnated. Leave to rest for 10 minutes and cover with a humid and clean cloth.
Stir from time to time.
Once the rice has cooled down it will be ready to use.

How to Properly Prepare Sushi

Do you crave sushi but have a difficult time finding a good sushi place in your community? You can create your own since the ingredients needed are not that expensive and it is very easy to make.

MATERIALS NEEDED IN CREATING A SUSHI

The materials needed for this endeavor are nori (seaweed wraps), sushi rice, vegetables, sashimi grade fish, bamboo sushi mat, soy sauce and different kinds of seasoning.

STEPS IN PREPARING THE RICE FOR THE SUSHI

Remember to buy the right type of rice. Rice use for sushi is different from the standard rice that you can buy in your local market. To create your own sushi rice, you need to buy short grain rice.

Follow the cooking instructions indicated in the rice package. The short grain rice variety is the only type of rice hat will provide the stickiness that you will need when creating your masterpiece. Flavor the rice with seasoning after you are sure that it is thoroughly cooked.

Place a few tbsp. of Japanese rice vinegar in a pot together with a few tbsp of granulated sugar and two to three pinches of salts and heat it up. When the salt and granulated sugar completely melted in the mixture, your vinegar mix is now ready. Carefully pour the vinegar mix in your rice.

Place the rice from the rice pot into a wooden container or plastic container and then carefully spread it with a wooden spoon or spatula. The rice needs to be cool enough so that you can safely handle it and for additional stickiness.

STEPS IN CREATING A SUSHI

You can buy nori, which is also known as seaweed wrap, at the Asian deli or at a gourmet outlet. You can also buy it on online Asian specialty product stores. Carefully place the nori on the sushi mat with the more striking portion facing the bamboo mat. Wet both of your hands with H2O and evenly spread the rice onto the nori.

Arrange the sushi ingredients in the center of the seaweed wrap. You can use your favorite vegetables and fish. Cut the vegetables and fish thinly to bring out its flavor. Add some ginger to enhance the flavor of your masterpiece. Carefully pull the mat and roll the nori.

When you are finish rolling the wrap, wet the edges of the sushi to seal it. Cut the roll into numerous pieces. Use soy sauce for additional flavor. You can now enjoy your very own homemade sushi.

Boston Esplanade - Best Activities For You to Enjoy

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you've ever watched the nationally-televised Boston Pops July 4th concert, you've seen the Boston Esplanade.  The Esplanade - also called the Charles River Esplanade - is a grassy tree-filled park extending along the Boston side of the Charles from the Museum of Science to the Boston University Bridge.

In addition to being the site of many free summer concerts, free movies, and the world's largest 2-day regatta, it contains numerous other recreational facilities, the oldest public boat club in the country, and 6 miles of paths.

Although many Bostonians regard the Boston Esplanade as their favorite park because of its many recreational activities and events, many visitors to the city never explore it - in fact, many do not even know that it exists.  It may be Boston's most hidden park - even though, once you know where it is, it's almost in plain view.

Why?  The reason can be explained with two words:  "Storrow Drive."

Storrow Drive is the busy east-west highway that runs parallel to the Charles River, effectively cutting off the Esplanade from Beacon Hill and Back Bay, the communities that border it.  Although the park itself began back in 1880 with a small 10-acre parcel of land near the mouth of the river, land creation through the filling of mud flats and tidal marshes during the next 5 decades gave birth to much of what is now the Esplanade.

Helen Storrow, a wealthy widow, donated $1 million to the city to extend the park down the length of the Esplanade in 1930, with the understanding that a road would never cut through the area.  Ironically, as soon as she died in 1949, a road was built and - adding insult to injury - named after her.

Although several pedestrian walkways over Storrow Drive give access to the Esplanade, they're not easily visible unless you happen to know where they are.  And since many buildings in Beacon Hill and Back Bay back up to Storrow Drive, they block the view of the Esplanade so that it can't be seen from most spots in the city.

Finding the Boston Esplanade is well worth the effort.  In addition to the Boston Pops concerts at the Hatch Shell concert stage on July 3 and 4, the Esplanade provides prime viewing spots for watching the July 4th Fireworks over the river.  The Hatch Shell also hosts numerous other free concerts throughout the warm months, as well as family-friendly free movies on most Friday nights during the summer.

You can also find tennis courts, ball fields, and 6 docks.  If you want to try sailing, Community Boating provides high-quality sailing, kayaking, and windsurfing instruction and boat access to kids from 10-18 during the summer for a bargain $1 membership fee.  (Adults pay more, but the cost is still very reasonable.)  In October, as many as 300,000 spectators converge on the Esplanade and the Cambridge side of the river to watch 7,500 athletes from all over the world compete in the 2-day Head of the Charles Regatta.

But probably the most popular Boston Esplanade activities center around the pathways.   Walkers, runners, rollerbladers, parents pushing baby carriages, dogs on leashes, and bicyclists fill the paths, almost year-round.  Even though cars zooming along Storrow Drive can be seen and heard beyond the trees, you feel like you're in a different world when you're walking, running, or biking along the Esplanade's paths next to the river.

Sushi Calories - More Than A Mars Bar!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Before you go thinking all fish is considered healthy, you may want to check these sushi calories first! It turns out that those little, tasty rolls pack quite a wallop in the calorie department. I'm talking a real wallop - like more calories than a Mars bar! Surprised? Yeah, so are most people.

First, consider that sushi is wrapped in white rice, which by itself isn't exactly a great choice. For people looking to trim down, it's probably wise to avoid simple sugars of this kind all together, if possible.

There are brown rice sushis, so these are already a healthier option. Still, though, there are some serious calories to contend with. For example, an eel and avocado roll has 372 calories and 17.5g of fat!

Granted, much of this is "good" fat, but still, that's a whole lot of calories for one tiny roll of sushi! And, if you make the mistake of getting something fried, you're in even bigger trouble. Remember that shrimp tempura roll you ate? Well, I'm sorry to break the news to you, but it had 544 calories and 13g of fat in it!

This is not to say that you should avoid eating sushi completely, but, it's not something you want to indulge in too frequently. Oh yeah, not to kick a fish while he's down, but another bit of bad news regarding sushi -- it's typically very high in mercury relative to healthier fish options like salmon.

Still, this does not mean that sushi is the enemy. Just try to be more discerning when it comes to what kind you eat. If you're still not sure, a much healthier alternative is to go with the sashimi, which leaves out the rice (although it still carries the same mercury risk).

Don't spend all of your sushi calories in one place!

Sushi House - A Combination of Japanese and North American Sushi

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you ever heard about sushi House? It is a series of restaurants in North America. The specialty of these restaurants is the recipes they provide. They serve different types of recipes like rolls, sashimi etc.

In addition to the conventional Japanese items, the sushi House also provides conventional North American items to convince their North American consumers. They experiment with combinations of conventional Japanese tastes and North American tastes to form delicious North American sushi items. One among them is the California sushi roll.

They provide simple and most requested sushi items, that are very low in cost compared to other restaurants. Hence Sushi House is a place for ordinary people to sit and have their food with peace of mind.

It is possible that you will like most recipes in Sushi House. If you have a doubt on the selection of a restaurant, you can definitely move there.

Even though the taste is very good, you have to be very careful in terms of overall quality of the product. These restaurants are mainly focusing on people who are looking for sushi food and low rate. Because of this, there is a chance to use poorer components for the preparation of food. They also cannot afford the cost of a well trained chef and mostly they keep inexperienced chefs.

You cannot expect graceful food, if you are planning to have food from a Sushi House. At ume sushi, you can expect the great taste of the food at a high rate.

A high value sushi food is available in genuine Japanese restaurants compared to other sushi restaurants. They stand out in the value of making rice, cooking of vegetables, and fish. They have their own style of presenting the meals for their customers. So rather than choosing a Sushi House, you can move towards a Japanese restaurant for a high value sushi food with high value and mouth-watering taste.

The style of conventional Japanese sushi has beaten even the hard to please sushi consumers. They have traditional combinations of flavor and colors that is not available in any other restaurants. The reason why people settle down at North American sushi restaurants is not only the low price, but the interest they have towards North American style of sushi. Those who want stylish California roll has to move towards a Sushi House, since the conventional Japanese restaurants and other high value restaurants will not provide these items.

The seafood lovers, who always love to try a variety of sea food, are always recommended to go to a conventional sushi restaurant rather than selecting a restaurant chain.

How To Transform Your Refrigerator For Healthy Appetizers And Snacks

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the first steps to choosing healthy snacks and appetizers is to make a list before you go to the grocery store and stick to it. You don't have to stop eating all of the foods that you've been eating but you do need to learn to make better choices and try to eat more raw and organic foods. Even if you are not overweight, a raw food oriented diet will be healthier for you over the long run, so make a list and stay off of the cookie aisle!

First off, get out a garbage bag and clean out you kitchen cabinets and the refrigerator. Throw away all of those opened bags of fatty snack foods including the chips and microwavable food. You are going to change the way you look at appetizers and snacks and you have to get rid of the evidence of your old thinking.

Now that you have ridded your self of all the garbage food and made room for the good stuff, go to the store and buy fruits, vegetables, and nuts that you will be able to use to make fresh raw food appetizers and snacks. You can also buy some dried fruits for snacking as well, just stay away from the ones that have all the added sugars.

Invest in a good food processor and a juicer for making natural juices and chopping up fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure you have made plenty of room in your fridge for all of the healthy raw vegetables you will be bringing home.
